THE INCIDENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AND CHRONIC VIRAL HEPATITIS C IN 2023 IN ALMATY

Abstract

Introduction: Hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes mellitus are significant public health problems worldwide, and their co
occurrence increases the burden on the healthcare system. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of both hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes, especially in urbanized regions such as Almaty [2,10]. According to data collected from 
the state information system “Electronic Register of Dispensary Patients”, there has been a significant increase in hepatitis C 
and type 2 diabetes cases in Almaty from 2018 to 2023 [8]. In particular, studies have shown that the number of patients with 
type 2 diabetes has increased, which is partly due to increased insulin resistance in patients with hepatitis C. The impact of 
these diseases on public health and economic costs requires increased attention and the development of targeted 
intervention strategies [12,13,15]. 
Aim.: to estimate the prevalence of comorbidity of T2DM and HCV among residents of Almaty in 2023. 
Materials and methods: Data from the state information system "Electronic Register of Dispensary Patients" based on 
ICD-10 were used to analyze cases of T2DM and HCV. A descriptive cross-sectional design and logistic regression were 
used to assess the relationships between the diseases. 
Results: In 2023, 475 cases of comorbidity of T2DM and HCV were registered in Almaty. The prevalence of HCV among 
patients with T2DM was 0.85%, and the incidence of T2DM among patients with HCV was 9.03%. 
Conclusions: The results showed that the comorbidity of T2DM and HCV remains a significant public health problem in 
Almaty. It is necessary to strengthen preventive measures and improve screening programs, especially among high-risk 
groups, to reduce the prevalence of these diseases.
